Welcome to FISA
FISA – Film Industry Support Austria is a subsidy programme by the Austrian Federal Ministry for Digital and Economic Affairs designed to support the production of cinema films. Funding is possible for national productions, Austrian-foreign co-productions as well as service productions.
We are pleased to announce that the program for this year's Viennale features four FISA-funded productions:
- LITTLE JOE by Jessica Hausner (COOP99)
- DIE DOHNAL by Sabine Derflinger (PLAN C)
- BORA by Bernhard Pötscher (BERNHARD PÖTSCHER)
- ROBOLOVE by Maria Arlamovsky (NGF)
Additionally to the films in the main program, retrospectives, monographies, cinematographies and historiographies are planned, short films are grouped together.

The 57th Vienna International Film Festival takes place from October 24th to November 6th 2019.
When East Meets West
We are pleased to be part of the 10th edition of When East Meets West 2020.
In January 2020 the 3-day East-West Cooperation Program in Trieste brings together producers, financiers and filmmakers from 40 countries – this year focusing on Hungary, Romania, Moldova, Austria, Germany and Switzerland.
The program includes, for example, a co-production forum and workshops about the further development of projects in phases of post-production, about short film development or the approach of producers of long-film formats to series production.

Until October 31st 2019, feature film co-productions in development, which will be presented to decision-makers and financiers, can be submitted for the co-production forum. In addition, pitching sessions, individual meetings, panels and case studies are held.

US nature film "Oscars"
We are happy to announce that the FISA-funded documentary thriller SEA OF SHADOWS by Richard Ladkani received an award for Best Theatrical Film at the Jackson Wild Media Awards on September 26th 2019.
The successor of the award-winning documentary THE IVORY GAME celebrated its world premiere on January 27th 2019 at the Sundance Film Festival in Utah/USA, where it received the Audience Award: World Cinema Dramatic and has been influencing the political scene ever since.

European Film Awards 2019
46 films were recommended for the competition of the 32nd European Film Awards, fortunately also the FISA funded productions LITTLE JOE by Jessica Hausner (COOP99) and HEIMAT IS A SPACE IN TIME by Thomas Heise (NAVIGATOR).
We are excited about the selection – the nominations will be announced on November 9th at the Seville Film Festival in Spain, the awards ceremony will take place on December 7th 2019 in Berlin.
Congratulations to Elena Tikhonova, director of the Austrian culture-clash comedy KAVIAR, who received the Award for Best Director at the Filmfestival Kitzbühel.

The Filmfestival Kitzbühel took place from August 7th to 25th 2019.
Congratulations to the team of the German-Austrian co-production HEIMAT IS A SPACE IN TIME by Thomas Heise for the invitation to the section Wavelengths at the Toronto International Film Festival 2019, where its North American premiere will take place.
The cinematic collage about four generations of a family between Vienna, Dresden and (East) Berlin celebrated its world premiere at the Berlinale in 2019 and received the German Documentary Film Prize some months ago, the theatrical release is scheduled for November 2019.

The 44th Toronto International Film Festival takes place from September 5th to 15th 2019.
A first look at the music video "Enni Soni" (shot in Innsbruck) from the FISA-funded Bollywood blockbuster SAAHO by Sujeeth - in the leading roles the Indian stars Prabhas and Shraddha Kapoor - increases the suspense for the theatrical release:
Besides Innsbruck, the multi-lingual (Hindi, Tamil, Telugu) action thriller was shot in Seefeld, Sölden or Salzburg, among others.

A thriller at Piazza Grande!
We eager await the open air world premiere of the German-Austrian co-production 7500 by Patrick Vollrath - fully set in a cockpit - in front of 8.000 spectators at Piazza Grande at the Locarno Film Festival on August 9th.
Additionally, Amazon also showed great interest in the project with Austrian contribution and bought the feature film in May 2019.

La Rochelle 2019
Following her invitation to this year's competition for the Palme d'Or in Cannes, Jessica Hausner was honored with a homage at the La Rochelle International Film Festival in France.
In addition to the screening of her films LITTLE JOE, AMOUR FOU, LOVELY RITA, HOTEL or LOURDES, a public exchange with the Austrian director was held on July 5th.
The special event, which was also attended by FISA, included a chronological compilation of her projects as well as conversations on the filmmaker’s approach and collaboration with scriptwriter Géraldine Bajard.
The 47th International Film Festival took place from June 28th to July 7th 2019 in La Rochelle in southwestern France.
CIVIS Cinema Prize 2019
Congratulations to the team of the Austrian-German co-production THE TOBACCONIST by Nikolaus Leytner that received the CIVIS Cinema Prize 2019 on integration and cultural diversity on May 23rd 2019 as part of a TV gala.
The drama, which was supported by FISA in 2017, was produced by EPO FILM and the German GLORY FILM. Filming locations were Vienna, Attersee, Bavaria and South Tyrol.
Competition Cannes 2019
Congratulations to Emily Beecham on the award for "Best Actress" for her role as scientist Alice in the feature film LITTLE JOE (produced by COOP99), which celebrated its world premiere as part of the International Film Festival in Cannes at the Grand Théâtre Lumière on May 17th 2019.
The 72nd Cannes International Film Festival took place from May 14th to 25th 2019.
Selection Cannes 2019
We congratulate Jessica Hausner on the invitation of the feature film LITTLE JOE to the GOLDEN PALM competition at the International Film Festival of Cannes 2019.
The Austrian-British-German project produced by COOP99, starring Emily Beecham and Ben Whishaw, will premiere at the festival.
Co-produced with THE BUREAU (UK) and ESSENTIAL FILM (DE).
Also congratulations to Andreas Horvath, whose documentary LILLIAN will celebrate its world premiere in the parallel section QUINZAINE DES RÉALISATEURS.

Hollywood production Downhill shoots in Austrian Alps
Nat Faxon and Jim Rash (Oscar-winning screenplay for The Descendants with George Clooney) are directing the remake of the Swedish film success FORCE MAJEURE, starring Will Ferrell and Julia Louis-Dreyfus.

We congratulate Marie Kreutzer on the invitation of THE GROUND BENEATH MY FEET to the GOLDEN BEAR competition at Berlinale 2019 and the selection as opening film at the Diagonale 2019.

New Guidelines from May 1st, 2018
During the 16th meeting of the FISA Advisory Board the board members issued the following recommendations to meet the aim for a stronger international approach of the funding programme:
- The non-repayable grant for Austrian-foreign co-productions amounts up to 25 per cent of the production costs eligible for support.
- Reduced minimum spend and total production costs in case of service productions:
-) Minimum spend in Austria (eligible productions costs): EUR 400.000.- (feature)
-) Minimum total budget of production:
a) feature film: EUR 4 M
b) documentary: EUR 500.000.-
